Young carers have told us that balancing school with caring responsibilities can be hard. However, with the right support, young carers can thrive.

Carers Trust Scotland is delighted to launch the Young Carers Scholarship in partnership with The Education Academy Scotland and The Rangers Charity Foundation.

The Young Carers Scholarship is a fully funded, one-of-a-kind programme designed to help young carers across Scotland thrive in their senior phase of secondary school and achieve their very best in their National 5 and Higher courses.

This is more than just a scholarship, this pioneering programme goes far beyond financial and educational help. It’s here to give young carers:

  • Practical Educational Support – resources, study guidance, and tailored help to give you the best chance of success in your exams.
  • Wellbeing & Community – connect with a supportive network of other young carers who properly understand your journey.
  • Professional & Peer Connections – opportunities to meet and learn from people working in the caring sector who want to champion your future.
  • Inspiration & Role Models – special events with individuals who have been young carers themselves and gone on to achieve amazing things.

"Young carers face significant barriers in balancing their education with their caring role. Yet we know that when they have the right support, such as dedicated Young Carer Champions and flexibility, they thrive.  We are delighted to be launching this new programme with The Education Academy to support young carers as they work towards their National 5 and Higher qualifications. No young person’s education should be impacted due to caring responsibilities.  A huge thank you to The Rangers Charity Foundation as we pilot this innovative and flexible approach to learning for young carers".

Nicola Bell - Programme Lead (Scotland), Carers Trust

Scholars will be given fully-funded access to our range of tuition and revision offers for N5 and Higher subjects:

This is Scotland’s first scholarship of its kind.  It is innovative, unique, and designed with young carers at the heart. It’s about more than education: it’s about recognising your strengths, opening up new opportunities, and ensuring you feel supported both in and beyond the classroom.

The Young Carer Scholarship is an exciting collaboration between:

  • Education Academy Scotland – empowering young people to achieve their potential.
  • Carers Trust Scotland – the leading charity supporting unpaid carers across the UK.
  • Rangers Charity Foundation – showing compassion to those in need, tackling inequalities and creating opportunities for people of all ages to change their lives for the better.

Together, we are committed to breaking down barriers and giving young carers the tools, confidence, and belief they need to succeed.

"A huge part of our work in the community is based around educational opportunities and pathways towards employment for young people. We believe in their potential and want to ensure that young people with caring responsibilities can still achieve their goals in terms of their education and of course their longer term futures.  It was therefore a natural fit for us to sponsor the Young Carers Scholarship places at the Education Academy Scotland via the Carers Trust, and we can’t wait to see what the young people we are supporting go on to achieve over the course of the year.”

Gillian McKelvie - Communications and Partnership Exec.
